Even today, the legend persists: "If villagers misbehave, the whale god will appear with a storm and devour everything on land."
In summer, the Kujinami Festival is held at the shrine dedicated to said whale god. The festival's highlight, the raft race, draws huge crowds every year. Our protagonist, Unabara Kazumi, his friend Isonami Katsuo, and Katsuo's sister Wakane, are building a raft on the island owned by the Isonami family, hoping to win the race.
However, a series of violent typhoons forced them to put their raft-building work on hold for a while.
After the typhoon, the three came to check on the raft, only to find it destroyed and the beach littered with debris.
Among the driftwood was Kujira, a young girl washed ashore by the typhoon who could remember nothing but her name. The three decided to take care of her for the time being.
Who exactly was she?
Could she be connected to the legends of Koushi?
Thus begins a slightly odd communal life with Kujira.
